How can I get ready for the physical part of the program?
If you are smoking, quit. If you are not used to physical exercise, start with walking and work your way up to jogging and then running. Also, start stretching, and don't forget to stretch to loosen muscles prior to any physical activity. It is recommended that you contact your current health care provider prior to beginning any physical regimen.
What if my doctor has me taking medications, may I still attend?
Yes, medications directed by a physician, prescription and over-the-counter, must have a physician's written order to be used while attending the Program. All medications are secured. Medications do not prohibit you from attending the Program.
What will I be eating at WYCP?
A balanced, nutritious meal will be served three times daily at the Dining Facility.
Will there be drug testing?
Yes, within the Pre-ChalleNGe Phase (first two weeks), candidates will be tested for drugs. If any test is positive, the candidate will be dismissed. Random drug testing is may also occur during the Residential Phase of the program.
Can I smoke while enrolled at the academy?
No. Candidates/Cadets are prohibited from using any tobacco products while attending WYCP. If you need resources for quitting, please see the Nurse's Notes page under "Recommendations Prior to Arrival".
Do I have to have insurance during the 5 month period?
Yes. This is a requirement and ensures that medical care is not delayed when needed. There are resources for medical insurance located on the Nurse's Notes page under "Insurance".
Do you require a pregnancy test before entering the program?
A pregnancy test will be offered to all female candidates to insure proper prenatal care is provided if necessary.
What if I am pregnant?
Pregnant female candidates/cadets will be evaluated by a professional health care provider. If there are no extenuating circumstances, the individual's daily activities will be adjusted as recommended by the health care provider.
What type of medical services are available at the program?
A full time registered nurse is on staff with access 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. A local health care provider is available for illnesses and emergencies requiring treatment.
Do I need a physical before coming to the program?
A physical will be performed on Reception Day prior to processing into the program.
What types of physical ailments can prevent me from entering the program?
Accomodations will be made for physical disabilities and illnesses when possible. Any pre-existing condition that would worsen as a result of the physical demands of the program need to be addressed prior to arrival.
What if I have asthma? Will I be allowed to have my inhaler?
Asthmatics need to see their local health care provider to develop a maintenance program of treatment prior to arrival. Asthmatics will be allowed to carry inhalers (with doctor's order) unless abuse or misuse occurs, at which time the individual may be dismissed for illegal use of prescription medication.
What if I have allergies? (food, animals, hayfever, etc.)
Allergies need to be addressed by your local health care provider prior to arrival on Reception Day. Allergy injections will be given at the local clinic with parent/guardian responsible for ordering and mailing serum. Parents/guardians need to notify the program nurse of allergy treatments or needs prior to arrival on Reception Day.
