Youth Challenge Curriculum

Academic

Team_8_2_resized

YCP's education department is dedicated to academic success.  Our staff includes Louisiana certified teachers.  Each instructor is responsible for one class of approximately 20 students.  Cadets are in school from 8 am until 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

The primary goal of the education department is to increase the cadets' grade level and prepare them for the GED.  Students who meet standards are given the opportunity to take the GED test.  The secondary goal is to assist cadets with skills that will make them more productive and successful citizens.  This is achieved through participation in daily life skills classes.

Currently a cadet's grade level increases three to four grade levels during the five month residential period.  Louisiana YCP has a 90% pass rate for the students who take the GED in the program.

All students take the Armed Services Aptitude Test (ASVAB) while in residence.  The ACT is also offered to those students preparing for college.

Counseling

The counseling department's goal is to help ensure each cadet's success in the program and to assist them with short and long term goal achievement.  The counseling department provides personal, academic and career counseling in the form of individual counseling, group work and classroom instruction.  Each cadet is assigned a counselor.  The counselor to cadet ratio is approximately 40 cadets per counselor.

Physical Training

YCP's physical training program is comprehensive and ranges from intense physical training such as circuit training and running to interactive sports and military obstacle courses.  All cadets must participate in the physical training and are encouraged to excel and improve their fitness level.  Cadets are routinely evaluated on their level of fitness and progression.
