Eligibility

The Hawaii National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Academy offers you (the applicant) the opportunity to participate in an academic program in a military-based environment. The program will provide you with the training, experience and an education that will benefit you, your family, and your community.

You have determined that you want a second chance to earn your high school diploma. By completing your application packet, you are taking the first and perhaps the most important step in your life. You are seizing the opportunity to be a participating and contributing citizen.

Eligibility Criteria

  • 16-19 years of age (must not turn 20 during the cycle)
  • United States citizen and resident of Hawaii.
  • Drug free - Drug testing is mandatory and conducted upon entry and upon return from scheduled weekend passes. A "negative" drug test must be received to be considered for this program.  
  • Free from active or pending charges in the legal system. (Applicant may NOT be currently on parole or probation for other than juvenile status offenses, awaiting sentencing, and under indictment, charged, or convicted of a felony). Cannot have any felony adjudications.  
  • Enroll voluntarily
  • Unemployed while participating in the residential phase of the program.
  • Physically and mentally fit.

Program Benefits

  • Second chance to earn a high school diploma.
  • Learn self-discipline, responsibility and leadership.
  • Weekly allowance of $5 to offset small personal expenses during the residential phase.
  • Stipend of at least $200 upon successful completion of the residential phase to assist with post-secondary education, job-training or preparing for employment.
  • Volunteer mentor to assist with the return to the community and to achieve goals.
  • Continued support from the Youth ChalleNGe Staff during the residential phase and the post-residential phase.
