What ages do you accept?
Applicants must be between 16 and 19 years of age on the start date. Applicants must be 16 before their orientation/interview date (no exceptions are made for those 15 years old). Cadets cannot turn 20 while in the residential phase of the program.

Is there a cost for the program?
The program is funded by the State of Hawaii and Federal Government. Parents are not required to pay tuition or other costs associated with the program; however some clothing items may have to be purchased.

Is military service required upon completion of the program?
No. Although YCA is 'quasi-military' in structure, Cadets are not obligated or expected to join the service.

Will Cadets receive their GED or high school diploma?
Cadets will take GED courses and the five GED exams. If a Cadet passes all five exams, they will receive their high school diploma at the completion of the program through Waipahu Community Schools.

Can a student return to high school after completing the 5 month residential phase?
Yes, students are eligible to mainstream back to high school after completing the 5 month residential phase. This decision must be made by the student's counselor. Credits earned from Youth Challenge will only apply towards 9th grade equivalent classes.

What items are considered contraband?
Cadets will only need the items noted on the packing list. Any items not on the packing list should not come with your child.
