Academic Curriculum
Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy is one of the only Youth ChalleNGe Programs in the nation that is a state certified high school, High School #0020.
Education at the Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy involves many facets of academics. One of these facets is the General Education Development (GED) program. The Cadets will be divided into one of two categories for the awarding of a GED certificate, if the Cadet successfully completes and passes all instruction/testing. The two categories are the GED Exit Option Model and GED Adult Education.
The GED Exit Option Model allows students the ability to obtain a standard High School Diploma, awarded by Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy, by passing the GED tests as well as the FCAT.
Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy awards transferable standard High School Semester credits.
The GED-Adult Education allows students the ability to obtain a State of Florida High School Diploma by passing the GED tests. Under this program, credits are not earned towards a standard High School Diploma.
Academic courses are taught in a state of the art facility with very low teacher to student ratios. Each student has a computer workstation that is networked to a server that provides advanced software testing and training aids. All academic courses are taught by certified teachers from Clay County District Schools.
VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL CHALLENGE...
Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy offers a wide variety of vocational and technical courses. The courses are led by qualified instructors with state of the art equipment. Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy offers the following Vocational courses:
AUTOCAD...Students will learn the history of computer aided drafting and design and will gain a working knowledge of how to operate a CADD system. Students will generate a number of drawings utilizing AUTOCAD LTs basic power
Electronic Communication...The module involves the study of the basics of electricity, what electronic communication is, the different mediums and systems used in electronic communications as well as the creation of different types of circuits common to electronic communication systems.
Television Broadcasting\Video Production...The module involves the study of the planning and implementation of a television newscast. Students will learn the principles of television news broadcasting. Students will apply these principles by writing, producing and recording news scripts and commercials for a 30-minute television newscast.
Internal Combustion...The module is designed to assist students to understand the concept of the internal combustion engine. The module concentrates on how the engine is assembled. Students will work on actual 2HP Briggs and Stratton engine.
Horticulture...Horticulture is the science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, shrubs and trees. After completing this module the student will understand the many facets of horticulture including greenhouse management, plant propagation, and landscaping.
Landscape Design...After completing this module students will utilize the landscape design process to create original landscapes using both traditional drawing tools and computer drawing techniques.
Carpentry...The module stresses the elements of wall frame construction and shows the students how a typical wall of a house is built. From a kit included in the module, the students will construct a scale model of a typical outside wall of a house.
Home Security... In exploring home security students work with mechanical and electronic security devices. They study and learn to install mechanical security devices. In addition the students will install an electronic security system.
Home Wiring... In exploring home wiring, students work with real components. They study wiring components, tools and safety. They install typical electrical components in a simulated wall/workstation.
Home Plumbing... In exploring home plumbing students work with real components. They study plumbing components, tools and safety. The students will learn proper installation of a kitchen sink, bathroom facet and drain, water supply and drain lines
Hydroponics... The module involves the study of soil less culture of plants. By completing this module, students will understand the importance of hydroponics in our past, present and future agricultural practices.
Graphic Communications Vinyl Sign making... The module involves the study of graphic communications throughout history and into the present day. Students will utilize a software program in order to see the development of design and layout while completing a business portfolio cover.
Desktop Publishing... Upon completion of this module the student will be familiar with the basic principles of design and desktop publishing, and the practical implementation of these principles using desktop publishing software.
Exploring Home Design... Exploring Home Design is an exploratory level, modular technology learning unit. It is primarily designed for students to explore the concept of home design and architectural drafting. Using a series of drafting plates the student will go through the alphabet of line, lettering, floor plans and elevations.
Aquaculture... The module involves the study of aquatic resources and the development of these resources into a marketable culture. After completing this module, students will have a better understanding of aquatic resources and how these resources are used in the practice of aquaculture.
Exploring Linear Measurement... In Exploring Linear Measurement, students work with real measurement instruments. They study and learn to use the tape measure, the 3' steel rule, the 12" steel rule, a combination square, a framing square, a T bevel, a marking gauge, an inside and outside caliper, a venire caliper and a 1" micrometer.
PHYSICAL CHALLENGE
Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy offers extensive physical fitness training, which is provided by certified physical fitness instructors. The physical fitness program is a multi faceted comprehensive program that ranges from intense physical training such as running to interactive sports and military confidence courses.
All cadets at Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy are encouraged to excel in physical fitness, and are evaluated on their level of physical fitness.
