The mission of the West Virginia Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy is to train and mentor selected at-risk youth to become contributing members of society using the 8 Core Components in a quasi-military environment during a 22-week residential and one year follow-up Post-Residential program.

The Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy's Post-Residential program consists of the one-year mentoring relationship following graduation.  In order to support this relationship on an on-going basis, the Academy's Post-Residential staff work closely with the Cadets during the residential phase to help fine tune their Life Plan, or P-RAP (Post-Residential Action Plan) and will be available to support both the Cadet and Mentor during the post-residential phase.

Mentor Day is a one day training event required by all mentors. Mentors need to attend only one of these training dates. The Mentor Training Schedule for Class 2-2009, running from July 12 to December 11, 2009 is as follows:

What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is the presence of a caring responsible adult who, along with the guardian or parent, provides support, motivation, guidance, advice and friendship in order to help a young person succeed.

What can a Mentor do for a young person? 
A mentor can provide support and encouragement. They can be a role model and a friend. They can assist a young person in achieving  their goals in life.

MENTORING... THE CORE OF CHALLENGE
A critical and required component of the Mountaineer ChalleNGe program is the matching of each cadet with a caring, responsible adult mentor. This relationship begins in the Residential Phase and continues for a full year during the Post-Residential Phase of the program.
