The mission of the West Virginia Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy is to train and mentor selected at-risk youth to become contributing members of society using the 8 Core Components in a quasi-military environment during a 22-week residential and one year follow-up Post-Residential program.

MCA Wins Award

The Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy was awarded the "Responsible Citizenship" award at the national conference in South Carolina January 2006!!

The Dare Mighty Things' staff assigned to support the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program traveled to Charleston, SC to play host to more than 300 ChalleNGe lead staff and program directors at their 2006 Annual Workshop. Representatives from all thirty programs were in attendance, in addition to several National Guard Bureau staff, including Mr. Chris Gardner, Director of the Joint Staff, as well as Ms. Jennifer Buck, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

The annual awards ceremony took place on the final evening of the event in Charleston's historic art-deco theater, The Riviera. Awards were given out in twelve categories to these programs: Physical Fitness: South Carolina, Columbia; Health and Hygiene: Montana; Service to Community: Wisconsin; Job Skills: Alaska; Life Skills: West Virginia; Responsible Citizenship: North Carolina; Leadership/Followership: Arizona; Academic Excellence: New Jersey; Post Residential Performance: Oregon; Most Progressive Program: South Carolina, Camp Long; Best All Around Program: California; Innovation Award: Oklahoma.
