WV LITERACY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

The West Virginia Literacy Foundation, in cooperation with the Governor's Council on Literacy and the West Virginia Department of Education, offers a scholarship program for state residents who have completed/passed the General Educational Development (GED) test.

Students passing the GED with a score of 2500 and receiving an ACT composite score of 22 or above may apply for a $1,000 scholarship. Scholarship recipients will receive $500 per semester with the funds going directly to the approved university, college or technical education center. Applications must be submitted by March 1 to the West Virginia Literacy Foundation, PO Box 2987, Charleston, WV 25330.

PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP

The West Virginia PROMISE (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence) Scholarship Program, approved by the Legislature in 1999, offers each qualifying West Virginia GED student a full tuition scholarship to a state college or university or an equivalent dollar scholarship ($2709) to an in-state private college.

Applicants with a GED must have earned the GED after September 1, 2001, and within two years of the date his or her high school class would normally have graduated, and also must apply within two years after he or she attained the GED. A minimum score of 2500 on the GED exam is required for PROMISE eligibility. The GED must be earned within one year of the time of completion of instruction, but not later than twenty years of age.

The PROMISE Scholarship is based on the student's achievements-not on his or her parents' financial resources, on the college's resources, or on other factors. We are tying this opportunity, this investment, directly to the achievement on the part of the individual.
