COMMONWEALTH CHALLENGE
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

1. OBJECTIVE AND INTENT.

The Virginia National Guard Commonwealth ChalleNGe Program sponsors a scholarship program. This scholarship program is designed to encourage graduates in the Post-Residential Phase of the program to pursue their education in an institution of higher learning.

Scholarships will be reviewed only for the current school semester and awarded only for the current school semester. Scholarships will be determined by the Scholarship Committee. The Scholarship Committee will consist of members of the staff of Commonwealth ChalleNGe as follows: Director, Deputy Director, Program Coordinator, Cadet Services Coordinator, Post Residential Coordinator, Business Manager, and Counselor.

Total amount of all approved scholarships will not exceed $1500.

2. CRITERIA.

a. Each applicant must have passed the GED test and successfully graduated from the Commonwealth ChalleNGe Academy.

b. The applicant must have been accepted to attend an accredited community college, college, or university.

c. The applicant must be enrolled in an accredited community college, a four year college or university within 12 months of graduating from Commonwealth ChalleNGe.

d. Consideration will be given to the applicant who successfully is attending, or is accepted to a trade/vocational school.

3. PROCEDURES.

Scholarship Applications must be made to the Director, Commonwealth ChalleNGe, P.O. Box 7510, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23458-7510. A transcript of all college or university work from the school must be submitted with the application along with verification of tuition costs from the registrar's office. Student's just entering college or university must submit an acceptance letter from the institution they will attend along with class transcripts/schedules and verification of tuition costs from the registrar’s office. An incomplete application will be returned and not be considered until the next review.

A new scholarship application must be submitted with each renewal request.

The scholarship, once awarded, will be submitted directly to the college or university as payment of tuition for the individual concerned. Book reimbursement maybe considered by the Board. Should the individual not complete or attend the class for which the tuition is paid, he/she will reimburse Commonwealth ChalleNGe the full amount of the scholarship.
