Is there a cost to the cadet/parent?
Parents are not required to pay for tuition, room and board, books or other costs associated with the program. The course is free to those accepted; however some personal clothing items, medical co-pays, graduation expenses, etc... may have to be purchased.
What ages/genders do you accept?
Applicants must be between 16 and 19.5 years of age on the start date. Students may not turn 20 during the residential phase. Male and female applicants may be accepted.
Will I need an interview?
Yes, after you submit an application you will be scheduled for an on-site interview. This will consist of a group orientation and then an individual interview that last about 30 minutes. The interview is not geared to keep anyone eligible out of our program but so that we may see how to better serve each applicant.
Will I earn any high school credits?
No, but you will have an opportunity to earn your General Equivalency Diploma (GED). We do not offer high school credits at the SC Youth ChalleNGe Academy. With a GED you may enter most colleges and several branches of military service.
When may I visit my cadet?
Visitation is not allowed until the scheduled family day, which occurs about eight weeks into the residential phase of the program. You will be notified on Registration Day of the time and dates of all passes.
If I am accepted into the ChalleNGe program am I joining the military?
No. Becoming a cadet does not require anyone to enlist. You will be introduced to a wide variety of educational, training and employment possibilities. As a cadet, you will have the opportunity to be introduced to recruiters from all branches of military services. You will also have an opportunity to take the Military Entrance Exam (ASVAB). Some of our graduates do join the United States Armed Forces to pursue a career.
