Class 31 Highlights

Counselor's Corner

Wk 21 - Headcount 76

  • End of cycle clean up & prep for next class underway.
  • 37 cadets had a special pass on Sat.
  • 37 cadets went to the Tulsa Zoo and marched in the Disney Christmas parade
  • Final mentor pass on Sunday went well
  • Watched a couple movies over the weekend
  • Post TABE testing conducted to evaluate cadet progress
  • Paintball activity on 12/2
  • All cadets attended an Equal Opportunity class on 12/3
  • All cadets participated in Mock job interviews on 12/4
  • Cadets marched in the Pryor Christmas parade on 12/4
  • Obstacle course & rock wall and Drug Intradiction Team addressed the cadets on 12/5

Wk 20 - 76

  • Education classes end this week.
  • All cadets participated in a Defensive Driving course conducted by the Okla. Military Safety Dept.
  • Thanksgiving pass!

Wk 19 - 76

  • Additional GED testing on 18 & 19
  • Job shadowing in the local community ends on Thurs.
  • Very busy this week with lots of service to community projects, such as adopt-a-grandparent, handicap assist, food bank, library, A Time to Grow daycare.
  • Final President's Challenge physical fitness test.

Wk 18 - Headcount 76

  • Cadets went rappelling at Camp Gruber on Saturday.  Cadets cooked hamburgers & hot dogs for dinner.  On the way back on Sunday they stopped at the MOUT village did some paintballing.
  • Job shadowing begins this week.
  • 1st & 2nd platoons marched in the Claremore Veteran's Day parade
  • 3rd & 4th platoons marched in Pryor Veteran's Day parade.
  • Honor Guard posted colors and 26 cadets participated in the Veteran's Appreciation ceremony at the Rogers Cnty Adult Care Center.
  • Final library trip this week - must turn it checked out books or cadets will have to pay for replacement.
  • Air Force & Navy recruiters visited with interested cadets

Wk 17 - Headcount 77

  • Performed Betsy Ross Ceremony at the American Legion
  • 32 cadets attended a gospel event in Wagoner
  • Various State Park and Pryor ball field clean up projects worked this weekend at Disney/Langley, Spavinaw, Snowdale.
  • GED testing on Nov 3 & 4
  • 12 cadets took field trip to West Tulsa Coalition meeting on Nov 5 to talk to Health Care Professionals about how to choose careers in the Medical field.
  • 26 cadets took the Hunters Safety test on Nov 6
  • 8 high merit cadets attended the Locust Grove Varsity friday night football game.

Wk 16 - Headcount 79
Busy weekend!

  • All cadets went to the airport Sunday & had a chance to fly in a plane.
  • 6 cadets earned a merit pass
  • 20 cadets took the ACT test
  • 27 cadets worked on the NTC food drive
  • 1st platoon helped out at the Osage Fall Festival
  • 2nd platoon turned pumpkins at the Pryor Pumpkin Patch.

Student Council meeting began this week.  Cadet Swigert was voted in as President.  Two from each platoon were elected as council members:  Washington, Henry, Howse, Jameson, Guilford & Green

Weekend Activities:

  • 9/26 - High Merit cadets attended the Locust Grove Varsity Homecoming vs. Oolagah football game and then helped with clean up after the game.  Scoreboard: Oologah 47 ~ Locust Grove 13
  • 9/27 - Some cadets participated or helped out at the Pryor Fever Race & Mud Run (5k).  Pictures will be posted to the Mud Run website soon.  Cadets were posted along the route in teams of two to help cheer on the runners, pass out water and help people out of the mud if necessary.  One of the vendor's there volunteered to feed the cadets a BBQ lunch.  Cadet Ghazlo came in 3rd place overall...high five Ghazlo!  His run time was approximately 19 min 45 seconds.  He received a medal and was allowed to wear it until the PSG's made him take it off.   Other cadets who participated were: Rowland, Tinsley, Trickey, McMillan, Saenz, Scott, Sosa, Brooks, Camus, Coates, Espinosa & Descheeny.
  • 9/28 - President's Fitness Challenge testing completed.  Per Shift Supervisor Burlin there was lots & lots of improvement and overall motivation compared to last time.



Wk 10 - Headcount 89

Weekend Activities: 

  • 9/21 - All cadets got a chance to play volleyball at the Rec. Center.
  • 9/20 - Most cadets went to Sequoyah State Park to clean up hiking trails, 1st platoon helped out at the City of Pryor fundraiser for Christmas presents for 3 local children in need.
  • 9/19 - Alex Washington, a 2002 graduate of Thunderbird Youth Academy, returned to campus on Friday, SeptemberTYA Grad Guest Speaker, Ms. Alex Washington, urges all cadets to grow, adapt, achieve: and “get over it”.  19. She urges all cadets to grow, adapt, achieve: and “get over it”. Alex will graduate from Oklahoma State University in May with a degree in Human Resources. She represents the PROMISE that is available to all graduates of the Youth ChalleNGe Program.
  • High merit cadets cooled off at the rec center pool.



Wk 9 - Headcount 94

  • Weekend Activities:  14 cadets attended the Scottish Festival, 30 cadets provided motivational support to bikers at the MS-150.
  • 9/12 - Cadet Gatlin & Camus helped out the Pryor Library by reading Curious George stories to local elementary students; one read and one donned the Curious George costume.
  • 9/5 – A few of the Cadets went on Mentor pass (those that could not go on Sunday)
  • 9/6 – Cadets worked at Sequoyah State Park; walked in the Palmer Walk/Run for a Drug Free Life Event; 4 Cadets assisted at the Pryor Library with the Military Appreciation Event
  • 9/7– Some Cadets did Community Service Projects with their Mentor during Mentor Pass other cadets worked at the Claremore Expo.
  • 9/8-9 – Cadets helped at the Time to Grow Daycare CARD Headstart and the Rogers County Spring Fair.
  • 9/10-11 - 2nd round of GED testing conducted



 Open House

Congratulations!  You've waited 6 long weeks and made it to Open House pass.  We hope you enjoy the weekend with your cadet.  Be sure to have some activities planned so cadets are less likely to fall back into old habits.



Welcome to Pre-Challenge

Day 6 - 134 Candidates - Explanation of the Persident's Challenge Physical Fitness testing. Mentee training begins today. Post and area police call (grounds clean-up). All the classes candidates go through lead up to the Commandant's Inspection of their barracks today. Candidates will learn and make corrections from this process. End of week platoon group discussions.

Day 5 - 134 Candidates - Started the physical training (PT) routine this morning. Candidates had fun climing the National Guard Rock Wall today(pictures posted in the Photo Galleries). More training classes on trust and teamwork, computer usage, pep talk from the Director, etc. Too many classes to keep going on and on and on!

Day 4 - 136 Candidates - Candidates went on their first road march this morning (walking only & slathered with sunscreen). More classes on Honors to the Flag, health & hygiene, honor/merit system, community service, and family dimensions. Physicals completed by volunteer doctors/nurses in the evening.

Day 3 - 140 Candidates - Physical preps begin today recording the height, weight, body fat, etc. Trust/Teamwork exercises and laundry sessions begin today. More training on discipline system.

Day 2 - 144 Candidates - Candidates do a lot of reading in their cadet handbook and participate in training classes about bed making, wall locker standards, dining facility procedures, courtesies & conduct, complaint/ request card procedures and just basic everyday living at TYA. Introductions to department heads, Class Ring/Portrait vendors and the Pryor Police AWOL policy conducted. During down time just before lights out, candidates get time to write letters home.

Day 1 (7/13/08) Congratulations on getting your candidates here today! We have a total of 151 kids registered today as of 4 pm. We hope your in-processing experience went well and keep graduation in your sights. The first day mainly consisted of issuing supplies and clothing, getting familiar with living space and emergency drills.
