When can I visit my cadet?
Visitation is limited to 3 approved Saturdays throughout the cycle and typically lasts 8 hours.

Do I have to join the military?
No, military service is not required upon graduation.

Why is the program 22 weeks long?
We have 2 cycles per year, which breaks down to 5 1/2 months or 22 weeks per cycle.  Also, studies have proven that it takes 20-28 weeks to develop consistent habits.  In your case, they will be good productive habits!

What is the cost of the program?
Nothing!  The program is FREE to eligible 16-19 year old New Mexico Residents.  We do, however require cadets to bring a money order in the amount of $120 for any emergency situations.  Any unused money will be returned to the cadet upon graduation.

Why do I have to have a Mentor?
A very important part of ChalleNGe is the Post-Residential Phase.  After you graduate, we stay in touch with you for 1 year to help you adjust.  Your Mentor is a very important part of this process.  He or she will meet with you regularly to help, lead, guide, and direct you on the path to success!

    Will I have to run?
Yes!  The program has physical requirements, but don't worry, we will start slow and work you up to the best physical shape possible.

What will I do during the day?
An average day at the New Mexico Youth ChalleNGe Academy is filled with physical fitness, academics, and service to the community activities.

Will I be able to call home?
Yes!  You will be able to call home approximately once a week.

Will I be able to go home for special occasions?
You will be allowed to go home on approved occasions (i.e. Spring Break and Thanksgiving Break).

    What should I bring?
A list of articles that you must bring is on Cadet Packing List (pdf).

How do I get my GED scores sent to the College or University I desire and how do I handle taking the ACT test?
You may request your GED transcript (scores) from Testing Services at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell by calling 575.624.7227 or 575.624.7183.  NMYCA does not keep GED or college transcripts on file.  WE DO NOT HAVE GED OR COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS AT YOUTH CHALLENGE!

The Case Manager assigned to your platoon will assist you in registering for the ACT test while you are enrolled in the program.
